Reading River Levels Before You Paddle

Every water trail on this site lists a USGS gauge where one exists. Before you load the boat, pull up that gauge and look at two things: current discharge (cubic feet per second) and the trend over the last 24 hours.

Too low and you will drag over gravel bars. Too high and strainers, low-head dams and pushy current turn a friendly float into a rescue. Outfitters on Sugar Creek and the Blue River post their own go/no-go levels — trust them over an internet number.

Rain upstream matters more than rain overhead. A dry launch site can still be running high from a storm two counties away.
